Colombian Coffee beans are grown at high altitudes and tended with painstaking care in the shade of banana and rubber trees. This coffee is among the best in the world, rich, full-bodied, and perfectly balanced. The arid mountains and the well-drained, rich volcanic soil of Colombia provide ideal conditions for growing high quality Arabica coffee.

Colombian Coffees are grown in two main regions, the central region around Medellin, Armenia and Manizales, and the eastern, more mountainous region near Bogotá and Bucaramanga. Medellin, Armenia and Manizales varieties are known for their heavy body, rich flavor and fine, balanced acidity.

Coffees from Colombia are graded by bean size – Excelso and Supremo, Supremo being the larger of the two. This has no real bearing on the quality, as a larger bean does not necessarily mean better cup quality.

The Colombia Coffee Federation has evolved a system wherein hundreds of thousands of small producers wet-process their coffee on or close to their farms, and deliver it to collection points and eventually to mills operated by the Federation, where the coffee is sorted and graded according to rigorous national standards. This creates a leveling effect where one farmer’s wet processing and microclimate may be exceptional and another’s may be mediocre. In general, coffee from Colombia display fine, balanced acidity, caramel sweetness and have a full, rich body.
