Sustainability

Coffee with heart

Our coffee with heart extends to having a positive effect on the world around us, specifically the wellbeing of the environment and farmers who produce coffee.

The Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and organic coffees that we carry offer better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and coffee producers around the developing world.

We also carry a 100% Fairtrade Organic blend – Fairtrade Organic Super Mocha, especially for our wholesale clients.

Fairtrade Coffee

What is Fairtrade Coffee?

Fairtrade certified coffee means the farmer has been paid a higher price for his coffee than he would have on the open market. Fairtrade also works to deliver a better deal for farmers and producers in the developing world through:

  • A fair and stable price for their produce.
  • Security of long-term contracts.
  • Investment in local community development.
  • Improved working conditions.
  • Environmentally sustainable farming methods.
  • Support in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully in the global economy.

Our FLO ID/Fairtrade licence is: 20037.

Rainforest Alliance Coffee

What does Rainforest Alliance do?

The Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers. It involves businesses and consumers worldwide in the efforts to bring responsibly produced goods and services to a global marketplace where the demand for sustainability is growing steadily.

Farms that meet the comprehensive criteria of the
Sustainable Agriculture Network earn the right to use the
Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal.

Organic Coffee

What is organic coffee?

If you are drinking a cup of organic coffee it will have been produced without the use of synthetic chemicals or pesticides.

The organic coffee we carry has been certified in the country of origin. That means production must be actively organic, using organic composting and extends to environmental protection of watersheds and soils. It is a rigorous process to get certified. Producers are independently audited for at least two years before certification is granted.

We are currently also working toward getting our roastery Australian Certified Organic.

Hessian coffee sacks

Every little bit helps

We also like to make a difference wherever else we can:

  • Our branded takeaway cups and lids are a 100% biodegradable and recyclable brand, that use PLA a renewable starch-based bioplastic and soy based inks.
  • We recycle our coffee sacks, either offering them free to customers (who recycle them into dog beds, wall hangings, upholstery etc) or donating them to local council for use in weed control. We also donate the more artistic sacks to the Endeavour Foundation who make them made into carry bags – reducing landfill and giving work opportunities to people with disabilities. We buy them back and then resell them in our café.
